Methodology and Results are Consistent with FDA and OSHA Testing
Brazilian Blowout, a leading hair smoothing treatment, announced today that it has received the results of a comprehensive study conducted by Professor James F. Haw, a University of Southern California chemistry professor, confirming that Brazilian Blowout falls well below Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) exposure limits.
Dr. Haw’s findings are consistent with the results of 24 comprehensive air monitoring studies conducted by OSHA across numerous salons in 2010 which showed that in each case exposure levels were safely below OSHA’s Action Level (AL), Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) and Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL). Dr. Haw’s study was conducted in two active Southern California salons.
Dr. Haw is the director of Environmental Studies Program and the Ray R. Irani, Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corp., Professor of Chemistry at the University of Southern California. Dr. Haw focuses much of his research on chemical reaction mechanisms in catalysis of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones and aldehydes as well as environmental chemistry. Dr. Haw’s work has been published more than 170 times in numerous peer-reviewed journals. “We are pleased with Dr. Haw’s findings,” said Brazilian Blowout CEO, Michael F. Brady. “His study, performed in actual working salons by licensed cosmetologists, on real clients, shows, once again, that in the hands of a licensed professional who has been trained in the proper application of Brazilian Blowout, our products pose no risk of violating OSHA’s short-term or long-term exposure limits.”
As part of his study, Dr. Haw performed air quality monitoring at actual salons with stylists certified in the treatment of hair with Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution. Standard air monitoring pumps and aldehyde solid absorbent tubes were attached to the client and the stylist during various tasks. Dr. Haw measured the air quality before the treatment began, as the product was applied, during the course of blow drying and flat-ironing and after the process was complete. At no point during the process did the air quality value exceed 0.160 parts per million for the STEL analysis, well below OSHA’s STEL of 2 parts per million. OSHA’s PEL standard is 0.75 parts per million. In Dr. Haw’s study the PEL measurement never exceeded 0.052 parts per million.
This study, along with the 24 exposure tests performed by Federal OSHA, and numerous other independent air monitoring tests, confirm that Brazilian Blowout poses no exposure-level risk to stylists or their clients.
